Lots of us use WhatsApp to keep in touch with friends and family. Some may even have group chats where loads of people can stay in touch together. WhatsApp really is a great tool, but did you know you can use it to send voice notes? This removes the need for typing and allows you to focus on what you want to say.

What is a voice note?

Think of a voice note as a message that’s not using text. With a voice note your voice is recorded, and the person on the other end can listen back to what you’ve said. This has added advantages too as it means you can hear someone’s emotion.

The person who has received your voice note can respond using text, or they can send a voice note of their own. You could then listen to their note to you and continue the conversation from there.

This also works in group chats, so if you want to send a wild voice note celebrating your teams win you can, or you could send a voice note to tell them how your holiday is going.

How do I send one?

For this article I’m focusing on WhatsApp, but most messaging apps have a voice note function now. If you’re used to using iMessage, Messenger, or something totally different, it will probably give you the ability to send and receive voice notes.

Here’s how things work on WhatsApp

At the bottom right of the screen there is a little microphone icon. If you’re not using VoiceOver, you can just hold your finger here to record, then lift to send. If you are using VoiceOver, flick until you hear voice message, then double tap and hold to record, and lift to send.

If you make a mistake, move your finger left to cancel. If your using VoiceOver you’ll also hear the word cancelled. If you want to lock the recording so you can put your phone down and stay recording, just move your finger up.

If recording is locked, you can tap the send or cancel buttons to perform these actions, or you just double tap them if your using VoiceOver .

It can be more convenient compared with typing, so I’d encourage you to give it a go.

Conclusion

Voice notes are a great tool, especially if you need to say something complex. I use voice notes all the time and I certainly find it a great way of conveying information. Do give it a go and let us know how you find it.
