NCBI Possibility Lab team are finalists in the 2023 European Road Safety Awards for work done to enhance pedestrian road safety and micromobility awareness in Ireland.
After a survey of NCBI service users revealed 64.9% of people had experienced a near miss with an e-scooter, 63% had been injured in a public place at least once and 59% felt that increases in micromobility and changes in public space reduced their confidence to walk and access the community. NCBI Possibility Lab realised a need to address pedestrian safety. We focused on the growing use of micromobility and its impact on people with disabilities, including those who are blind or have low vision.
Our strategy included three key steps:
- Firstly, we listened to the experiences of people with disabilities, and collaborated with disability organisations, academics and international peers.
- Secondly, we conducted access consultancies and user testing to encourage micromobility companies to make design decisions that include perspectives of people with access needs.
- Finally, we developed a free course called ‘Safe Micromobility in Ireland’. It can be completed as a 60 minute e-learning course, or by attending a 60 minute webinar. The course covers micromobility, how the transport landscape is changing, top tips for pedestrian safety , and importantly, how to address challenges and report incidents should they occur. Course Feedback includes, “It has really increased my awareness of mobility and how micromobility has to become a bigger consideration for safe travel and movement” .
