We regard this as a power tip as it is great to be able to access specific volume controls, especially as we live in a time of online virtual meetings. It is also good to be able to access JAWS Volume Control separately from other media controls.
- Press CAPS LOCK+SPACE followed by the letter V for volume.
- Use the letter J for adjusting the JAWS volume.
- Now press UP ARROW to increase the volume and DOWN ARROW to decrease the volume.
You can also adjust the system volume by using the letter S instead of J. Use PAGE UP and PAGE DOWN to adjust in larger increments.
Split JAWS sound from other Media
Another noteworthy capability is the option to separate JAWS audio while using a stereo headset. For instance, you can allocate all media, like Teams, YouTube, or Podcasts, to one ear and the JAWS screen reader to the other ear.
If you would like to hear all media through one ear and JAWS through the other, do the following:
- Press INSERT+SPACEBAR to activate the command layer.
- Press V to activate the volume layer, then B for Balance.
- Press the RIGHT ARROW key to send JAWS speech to the right ear and audio from all other applications to the left or the LEFT ARROW key to do the opposite.
For non-JAWS users looking to adjust the volume settings, simply press the Windows key, type “Volume,” hit Enter, and your master volume settings will display on the screen.
